Community Outreach...
United Methodists are mission-oriented and socially conscious. The Church has a long history of concern for social justice and its members have often taken forthright positions on today's issues. For more than 200 years, Methodists have worked to help those in need all over the world.

We believe that each of us is called to participate in the outreaching ministry of Jesus Christ. John Wesley and our forbearers saw our work in the simplest, plainest terms: Do all the good you can, in all the places you can, to all the people you can. Here at Woodside, we have a strong commitment to positively influence society through responsible social action. Our congregation participates in many local, national, and worldwide programs including:

Action In Montgomery (AIM)www.aim-iaf.org
Woodside UMC is a member congregation of AIM, an inter-faith, citizen-based, non-partisan, social justice organization whose purpose is to advance quality of life in Montgomery County and support it elsewhere in the region. AIM's mission is to build a base of power so that citizens can influence the institutions that affect their lives. AIM engages congregation leaders in developing an agenda around issues that directly impact their lives.

Angel Tree
Every year members of Woodside UMC participates in a holiday outreach project that provides gifts for children of disadvantaged families at Christmas.

Boy Scouts: Troop 209www.troop-209.org
Boy Scout Troop 209 meets at Woodside UMC every week. Troop 209 is among the oldest, active Boy Scout Troops in the Washington, DC area.

Bread for the World - www.bread.org
Bread for the World is a nationwide Christian’s citizen movement that seeks justice for the world’s hungry people by lobbying our nation’s decision makers. Bread for the World is 55,000 members strong, and growing. Our members focus on using the power they have as citizens in a democracy to influence government policies affecting hungry people.

Justice for Our Neighbors, housed at Woodside UMC, provides free, high-quality, legal services to immigrants in our congregations and communities.

Ministries United Silver Spring / Takoma Park (MUSST)
Woodside UMC is a member congregation of MUSST, a faith-based, interdenominational organization that provides emergency financial assistance low-income people living in the lower Silver Spring / Takoma Park area to prevent eviction, utility cut-off, and help pay for medical prescriptions.

Missionary Support
Woodside United Methodist Church supports two missionaries overseas:
  • Nan McCurdy, working in Nicaragua since 1985, implements programs that stabilize and raise the   quality of life for impoverished families living in disadvantaged rural communities.
  • Taka and Aki Asada (a member of Woodside UMC) live in Shimonoseki, Japan where Taka is   preaching at the Shimonoseki Christ Bible Church and Aki is ministering to the people of   Shimonoseki.

Rebuilding Together Montgomery County (formerly Christmas in April) - www.rebuildingtogethermc.org
Rebuilding Together is a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to helping elderly and/or disabled low-income homeowners, and families with children through home renovation and repair. Woodside UMC is a sponsor of this one-day event held on the last Saturday in April.

Shepherd's Tablewww.shepherdstable.org
The Shepherd’s Table was formed in 1983 by religious and community organizations and supported by hundreds of concerned citizens. It provides hot, nutritious meals in a warm, welcoming environment to those who are homeless and needy. Members of Woodside Church volunteer to serve meals on the third Wednesday of every month.

Silver Spring Interfaith Housing Coalition

Woodside UMC is a member congregation of the Silver Spring Interfaith Housing Coalition (SSIHC), a nonprofit organization of local congregations working together to provide housing opportunities in our neighborhoods for low income families and individuals.

Woodside Child Care Center  -  Click Here for More
The Woodside Child Care Center is a community ministry of Woodside United Methodist Church. For over 35 years, the Center has provided a safe and enriching after school child care center for children in grades K-6th.

Woodside Thrift Shop and Twice is Nice Shop

The Woodside UMC Thrift shop and Twice is Nice Shop provide good and better quality used clothes at affordable prices. The Thrift Shop is open Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Twice is Nice Shop is open on the first Thursday of the month from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Both shops are located on the lower floor of the Education building.
